BELGIAN NYE

Tuesday, December 31st
NEW YEARS & 100 GLASS GIVE AWAY
We are going to celebrate New Years Eve Belgian style! What does that mean? And we will have a lot of Belgian beer on to celebrate as well as our somewhat famous Moules Frites (Mussels & House-Cut Kennebec Fries), Belgian appetizers, desserts & more.  Also... If you have a young family and want to celebrate New Years but don't want the kids staying up till Midnight, this is the perfect time and place to bring 'em and celebrate. And then, and please take note, we are closing the kitchen at 8 pm and the whole place at 9 pm (last call at 8:15 pm) on New Years' Eve so that our employees can actually celebrate elsewhere. JOIN THE GENERIC GROWLER MOVEMENT TODAY!

Governor Signs CCBA Bill into Law!

Governor Jerry Brown today signed into law AB 647, the CCBA sponsored bill authored by Assemblymember Wes Chesbro. This bill makes three separate changes to the state statute (we're mostly interested in the 1st change):

Amends the definition of beer manufacturer

Changes the regulations regarding the labeling of refilled growlers
Allows regional guilds and the CCBA to sample beer at association and guild meetings.

Below are the details of these changes. More information can also be found on our web site.

1) The CCBA supports current labeling law that requires a brewery to “obscure” information from another brewery on a container before refilling and selling it. We believe it is important that when a consumer takes home a container of beer that the container (growler, bottle or keg) be accurately labeled with the name of the brewery and the beer inside the container. In some cases, breweries were simply putting a growler into a brown paper bag to “obscure” the previous label and then putting their label on the bag to meet the current requirements. When the consumer walked out the door, they would often take the growler out of the bag, and the growler was then improperly labeled. The growler was labeled as being from Brewery A, but had beer in it from Brewery B. If you were Brewery A, you now had your growler with your name on it with beer in it from another brewery. The ABC had no way to enforce this under current statute. AB 647 adds simple language to B&P code section 25200(c), which states that the previous label must be completely obscured in a manner “not readily removable by the consumer….” Additionally, some breweries were obscuring the name of the previous brewery but not the logo or text from the previous brewery. AB 647 adds that “any information concerning any beer previously packaged in the container, including the information regarding the manufacturer and bottler of such beer, or any associated trademarks must be removed, or completely obscured.” Please read the CCBA Growler Clarification for complete details and best practices on growler refills.

Here's a quick note from the people putting on the event:
Please join us in supporting CicloSDias -- San Diego’s first-ever open streets community-wide event.
CicloSDias will open 5.2 miles of car-free streets in the heart of San Diego to pedestrians, cyclists, families, and anyone who can imagine a new way to use them.
This is an exciting opportunity for neighbors and community members to come together and enjoy open, car-free streets on Sunday, August 11th. This event supports a clean, healthy and vibrant San Diego. What’s more, ‘open street’ initiatives in other cities have proven to be a powerful catalyst, driving those cities to become more walk-able, bike-able, and transit friendly.
We are asking you to invest in San Diego with a donation to help launch CicloSDias.
The CicloSDias Steering Committee is seeking to raise the funds necessary to cover event-related expenses, including traffic re-routing and control, police, and emergency medical services, and community outreach efforts.
Please become a supporter of CicloSDias and DONATE today!

SUMMER FLIGHTS

This week we have a Summer Saison Flight, RuinTen Side-by-Side Cask & Draft on Wednesday, and Hangar 24 Local Fields flights on Friday.

HANGAR 24 "LOCAL FIELDS"
Friday, June 28th starting at 11:30am

Hangar 24 was the first beer delivery ever made to Blind Lady Ale House. So, we love getting the chance to celebrate their amazing beers every chance we get. This weekend we're so happy to be putting on a flight of H24 "Local Fields" beers. Check out the flight list and be amazed!

Hangar 24 Polycot 7.2%
Polycot is a wheat beer brewed with hundreds of pounds of organic apricots grown in Southern California’s High Desert. We brew this beer during the very small window of time when the apricots are at their peak of freshness, usually early July. The pureed apricots add a wonderful fruit flavor to the beer and combine with the wheat for a refreshing tart finish. This  beer goes down smooth, but at over 1.5 times the alcohol of the Orange Wheat, it will sneak up on you.
Hangar 24 Palmero 7%
For our second Local Fields Series offering we looked to match a Belgian classic with the sweetness of Southern California Dates. Palmero is a traditional Abbey Dubbel with a healthy addition of dates from the Coachella Valley. Fruity esters from the Belgian yeast strain combine with a delicate date sweetness. This beer is full of flavors of caramel, raisin, rum and spice.
Hangar 24 Vinaceous 8.7%
The first beer in our Local Fields Series, Vinaceous was created to combine the best characteristics of wine and beer. Brewed in the style of an English Old Ale, this beer deviates from tradition with an ample addition of freshly crushed Mourvedre grapes from Temecula. Vinaceous pours a deep burgundy color and boasts flavors of rich malt, brown sugar, dark berries and a touch of oak in the finish.
Hangar 24 Gourdgeous 8.5%
It's time to usher in autumn with this robust porter. Using pumpkins grown just a half mile from the brewery, Gourdgeous also features traditional pumpkin pie spices and molasses. Rich with notes of dark chocolate, pumpkin pie, and sweet caramel, it's the perfect pour for when the days get shorter.
Hangar 24 Essence 8.5%
This beer is the essence of Southern California. A traditional west coast IPA with a distinct copper hue, enhanced by generous additions of navel oranges, sweet blood oranges and grapefruit, all grown in Redlands, CA. The citrus flavors and aromas intensify the zesty cascade and zythos hops to deliver a one-of-a-kind drinking experience. An invigorating beer with a  pleasant, defining bitterness, perfect for warm weather.
Hangar 24 Warmer 7.8%
This rich, strong ale neatly balances caramel malts and spices, providing warmth on a cool winter day. Every fall, we trek up the San Bernardino Mountains to harvest fresh spruce, then carefully add just the right amount of cinnamon and maple syrup to create our Warmer. It's a lightly hopped, tantalizing ale with festive notes of maple, spruce and spice; a nice complement to a cooler time of year.

SUMMER SAISON FLIGHT
Starts Tuesday June 25th at 11:30am

Celebrate summer 5 ounces at a time with this light, refreshing, summery flight of domestic saisons. Flight starts Tuesday at 11:30am, but should be on for a few days. Pairs well with our $10 Margherita and Local Greens lunch special.

THE CANS

Will Ferrell Pictured with Ben Davidson at the Cancer for College Craft Beer Bus benefit.

NO, WE DIDN'T BUY THEM ON EBAY
"Big" Ben Davidson, renowned for his 1960s exploits as an Oakland Raider Defensive End, as well as his enormous frame, grandiose mustache and his famed Miller Lite commercials, was obsessed with collecting cans, and bottles, during his travels as both a professional football player and devoted family man.

The six foot eight three-time AFL All Star and member of the AFL Hall of Fame began his football career with the Green Bay Packers — and that year the team won the NFL championship. Davidson later landed in the AFL with the Raiders, an iconoclastic team full of larger than life personalities and renegades, Davidson among them. Davidson played in Super Bowl II, three AFL championship games and the first AFC championship game. Davidson was part of the "Eleven Angry Men" defense that set the record for sacks in a season with 73 and made the Raiders the most notorious team in football.

Davidson's formidable physical presence and equally tremendous personality made him a natural for Hollywood, starting with Robert Altman's "M*A*S*H" in 1970. He can be seen in the movies Conan the Barbarian and Necessary Roughness, as well as innumerous television guest star appearances from Charlies' Angels to Happy Days.

But his most famous role was as himself in more than two dozen commercials for Miller Lite— he was, alongside Rodney Dangerfield and Bubba Smith, part of the popular, long-running "Tastes great, less filling" campaign that Advertising Age called the eighth-best advertising campaign of the 20th century.

Despite his relationship with Miller Lite, Ben loved craft beer and could often be seen in Blind Lady telling stories of his travels while sipping a local IPA. It was on just such an occasion that we met Ben and learned about his extensive collection. After sharing a few beers the offer was given: if we display them, we can have them.

Davidson spent his post-football years traveling the world with his friends and family including his wife of over 50 years, Kathy, and his three daughters— Janella, Dana and Vicky. An amazing storyteller, those adventures took him, on motorcycle, to the Panama Canal and around the US in a four-month adventure with fellow former Raider Tom Keating, but also on bicycle and in motorhomes, traipsing his family to all corners of the world.

THAT FEELS GOOD!

Our PLINY the FUNDRAISER was a huge success this year and it sure feels good to click "donate" with $2,000 attached to it. That one morning of drinking beer with friends will help put books in children's hands all over the world. That's pretty awesome.

PLINY the FUNDRAISER & AUTOMATIC

BLIND LADY ALE HOUSE
PLINY the FUNDRAISER @ BLAH
Sunday, March 10 at 11am
Just like last year we will pre-sale tickets for our PLINY the FUNDRAISER event via BPT and all profits will go to charity. At BLAH you will get BOTH a .25L glass of PLINY the YOUNGER & ELDER side by side for $15. Additional glasses will be available via raffle on Sunday with all proceeds going to charity. Tickets will go on sale at Brown Paper Tickets today, Friday, March 1st at 6pm via this LINK. This is a pre-sale only event. You can not just pop in for a PtY.

AUTOMATIC BREWING CO
AUTOMATIC WHITE RIOT w/ DARK HORSE COFFEE
This Saturday, March 2nd at 11:30am at Blind Lady Ale House.
One keg on coffee starting at opening. Dark Horse roasted a custom blend for this one and it should be pretty awesome. By the glass and by the growler.
IN THE FERMENTER
We've got an Oatmeal stout in the fermenter. Watch for a beer coming out for Black Sunday (aka St. Pats) and a new version of Chocolate Rain coming out for City Beat Festival of Beers. Also on the horizon:  a new pale ale and IPA, coming soon.
THREE YEARS OF AUTOMATIC
April 20th will mark three years since our first in-house beer, Chocolate Rain, was served. Watch out for an Automatic party of sorts happening. More details coming soon.

ANNIVERSARY STUFF
We still have some BLAH 4th Anniversary shirts, hoodies and glasses available. Stop in and find out what bundle prices we've got going. We'll keep selling them for another week, or two, and then they're gone.

02/28/13 - BEER & SPECIALS

TODAY'S BOARD
Our beers change constantly because no beer owns a line at Blind Lady Ale House. We typically order one keg at a time and when it's gone we clean the line for the next one up. This assures you, the customer, an ever changing selection served through the cleanest/shortest lines possible.
Our Seasonal "Specials" change constantly, as well. We purchase through small/local sources and don't do business with any of the big boys who sell food a the lowest price and quality. Almost all of our produce is grown in San Diego County, with some coming from around Southern California.
Our meats only come through sources where we know what's up. Our Chef picks sources he trusts and then crafts house-made sausage, chorizo, soyrizo, ciccioli, country pate, chicken liver pate and brats. Yep, they are all made in house from the best possible meats we can find.

We won't drop any names, but those big trucks you see dropping food off all over town don't stop in front of our place, and if they do, you can be sure it's not for us. We just won't do it.

THE SECOND ANNUAL CAPE RUN
Last year we had a wildly successful 5K Beer Run (inexplicably with capes!) This year we will repeat, but with a few tweaks. There will be THREE teams and they will be delineated by their color headbands, which you will receive if you PRE-SIGN-UP. (You will also receive and Anniversary Tee Shirt and FOUR beer tickets, if you sign up ahead of time.) Each team has a different map to the same four bars: Toronado, Livewire, Tiger! and BLAH. This way we will not overwhelm any one bar, and yet, we will. You will pass other teams along the way. You will drink a beer at each stop. You will return back to BLAH, in your headband and tee, a little juiced up and sweaty. And you will inexplicably wear a cape, if you remember to bring one. To participate if will cost you $44 - four bars, four beers, four years, plus the cool tee and sweatband!Purchase Tickets to the Cape Run on Brown Paper Tickets Now!
• RARE BEER LUNCH DAY #4 - the DOGFISH HEAD FLIGHT EDITION
Starting when we open at 11:30 am we will have a mini flight of Dogfish Head beers that include their Immort Ale (an English Strong Ale), Hellhound on My Ale (a superhopped ale) and Birra Etrusca (an "anceitn" ale). We will be serving these in our "Tiger!" flight glasses.

THE FOURTH ANNIVERSARY TOWNIE RIDE
Sunday, February 3, 10am or TBD
We love bikes. We love riding them fast but we also love riding them leisurely through the streets of our wonderful neighborhoods. We are gathering at Blind Lady in the morning (time to be announced, but likely around 10am) to ride around as a group and enjoy that San Diego air.  And it costs nothing, no Brown Paper Tickets to buy because we are giving you nothing but camaraderie and community and that is free. This is also SUPERBOWL SUNDAY and what better way to start that day than with some fresh air and exercise?

Whew. Thanks for four great years. Here is to four more!
