Belgian Beer Week

Did you know this week is Belgian Beer Week? Probably not since this is the 1st Annual event and we're pretty much the only ones in town celebrating.

Here's the lowdown. This week kicks off with the 7th annual North American Belgian Beer Fest (July 14-15) in Westland, MI and last year there were over 1,000 attendees, more than 220 Belgian beers from 80+ Belgian breweries, and this year’s event is expected to be even bigger.

So, that brings us to what we're doing. This year Artisanal Imports announced its sponsorship of the first annual National Belgian Beer Week (July 14-21), and we were excited to join in. We will be featuring flights of Belgian beers all week long and on Tuesday, 7/18 we will be giving away various Belgian glassware when we open at 5pm.

As of Monday our Belgian Flight looks like this, but it will most likely be changing once beers start kicking...

• St. Feuillion Grisette White
• Saison Dupont
• Monk's Cafe
• Petrus Aged Pale
• Petrus Sour Apricot
• St. Bernardus ABT 12

New English LAXIHAZICAL 10th Anniv IPA

LAXIHAZICAL IPA
New English 10th Anniv IPA
Collaboration with Automatic Brewing Co
Friday, 7/14, 6pm
Blind Lady Ale House was the first pub to get New English Beers when they began distributing. So when they asked Automatic Brewing to Collaborate on their 10yr Anniversary Beer, we were honored to be a part of it!
We got excited to brew a Hazy IPA, with lots of oats, and a ton of Nelson hops from New Zealand...and the result is delicious!
The haze is like a thick fog---it's opaque, without being a yeasty slurry. The Oats add a soft, creamy texture. The kettle hops give a clean, bracing bitterness, & the Dry-Hop addition brings a big tropical-fruit aroma and finish.
LAXIHAZICAL IPA debuted last Saturday at the New English Brewing tasting room for their 10yr Anniversary Party, and will be on tap this weekend at Blind Lady.

HANDLEBAR IIPA / FATHER'S DAY / SUMMER CIDERS

HANDLEBAR DOUBLE IPA
FATHER'S DAY RELEASE
SUNDAY, JUNE 18TH, 11:30AM
Handlebar is a big beer for a big man, Brewed every year by Automatic Brewing Co (our house brewery) to celebrate the birthday of Big Ben Davidson.

While your in, check out the can collection Ben donated to BLAH. What you see isn't only a portion of it, the rest are still in boxes waiting for us to build more displays. It must be one of the biggest collections of cans every collected--and drank--by one single person ;)

This year's beer...
Hazy 8% DIPA Brewed with Organic Malt from the U.K. & Germany, balanced bitterness from Citra & Simcoe Hops, then Dry-hopped with a grip of Mosaic hops for a tropical, fruity, juicy flavor and aroma. Dangerously refreshing, with big notes of Guava & Passionfruit, and a clean finish.

"Big" Ben Davidson, renowned for his 1960s exploits as an Oakland Raider Defensive End, as well as his enormous frame, grandiose mustache and his famed Miller Lite commercials, was obsessed with collecting cans, and bottles, during his travels as both a professional football player and devoted family man.

The six foot eight three-time AFL All Star and member of the AFL Hall of Fame began his football career with the Green Bay Packers — and that year the team won the NFL championship. Davidson later landed in the AFL with the Raiders, an iconoclastic team full of larger than life personalities and renegades, Davidson among them. Davidson played in Super Bowl II, three AFL championship games and the first AFC championship game. Davidson was part of the "Eleven Angry Men" defense that set the record for sacks in a season with 73 and made the Raiders the most notorious team in football. READ MORE...

APRIL'S AGENT OF CHANGE: THE CENTER

THE CENTER
April’s Agent of Change organization is The San Diego LGBT Community Center, more affectionately known simply as THE CENTER.
During the month of April every Monday we will celebrate Meatless Monday and give 20% of all meatless pizza sales to The Center.

Did you know they are the second oldest LGBT Center in the country? (They began in 1972!) And one of the largest too. They really are a community center in the broadest sense of the words— they really do so much  from health services to advocacy to mentorships. There have housing programs, several youth programs, a cyber center with career building classes, HIV services, Veterans services, mental health services— the list goes on. Last year, The Center provided more than 61,000 direct services to San Diego community members. Big work on a big scale.

You may be familiar with them for a whole host of reasons and one big one is their very organized DINING OUT FOR LIFE event which happens this month on April 27. (And that’s why we picked this month for The Center.) On DOFL Day, restaurants give a minimum of 25% of their sales from that evening to the Center.  We are proud to say we’ve been on board since BLAH opened.

Get more info on SD Agents of Change HERE.

A Reason to Survive : ARTS

So our new Agent of Change for February is ARTS, A Reason to Survive.  This is a favorite because they've been around for awhile but were really coming into their own and growing around when BLAH started and have really exploded into a huge and true force of change. Their primary goal is to help under-served youth— help them get through school, help them find themselves and their dreams, help them get into college or find a job— all via creative endeavors. They want these kids to find meaning, motivation and drive (aka a reason to survive). It's the whole teaching you to fish thing as opposed to just feeding you fish.

They accomplish this goal in a myriad of ways: from informal art experiences to professional skill building, through mentorships, apprenticeships, and a giant array of classes in music, studio art, building, design, writing, photography and more. They have a pretty sizable complex in National City that is truly super cool but they also reach out to schools, and neighborhood rec centers and groups and working-artists studios for the kids who cannot come to the Center.

They believe Art is the most powerful force of change.

This organization was started by this awesome guy named Matt D'Arrigo in 2001 after he lost his Mom to cancer. Art and music had really gotten him through it and he thought that if it worked for him, it could work for others. It was really small to start with— like really. And now? I don't know the numbers of the kids they reach but it's crazy and in the thousands. This documentary, about one of the ARTS students, Innocente, won the Academy Award for Short Documentary— and if you haven't seen it you should, it's online and it will make you sob and but also believe:
